Being a truck driver is an adventure unlike any other, as you roll down the highway with the wind in your hair, vast expanses of tarmac in front of you, and the world passing by outside your windshield. But hey, it's not all calm seas (or should I say, calm trucks) either. I'm about to reveal the single greatest problem that we encounter out here on the open road from the viewpoint of a truck driver.
Loneliness is the Unseen Challenge
You may now assume that what makes us unhappy is the long hours, the traffic, or even the weather. But in all honesty, loneliness is the main challenge we truckers confront. Yes, you heard correctly.
Lonely roads and rest areas
Imagine yourself in your vehicle with miles and miles of open roads. For some people, that can sound like a dream, but it can also be very isolating. Especially on those long, lonesome trips that take days or even weeks, the road may seem extremely lonely.
There's no doubt that being with friends and family is preferable to being linked through our beloved CB radios and phones. It hurts that we miss people's birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays.
The Silence is the Sound
The silence inside the cab, even as we travel through the busiest cities, can be overwhelming. You are alone with the engine's hum, the sound of the tires on the road, and the sporadic crackling of the CB radio. Without a doubt, there are times when the seclusion is peaceful, but it may also be emotionally taxing.
How We Manage
How, therefore, can we truckers approach this enormous challenge?
Hugs virtually
Thank God for modern technology. Even when we are thousands of miles away from our loved ones, social media and video calls allow us to keep in touch.
Jamming when traveling
We have our podcasts and playlists to keep us entertained. Our travel companions are audiobooks and music.
Communities of Truckers
Here, we have our own small trucker communities. It's like a mini-family reunion when we get together at rest areas or restaurants that welcome truckers.
Mental fortitude
The battle with loneliness is in the head. To keep our spirits high, many of us engage in mindfulness and meditation practices.
In conclusion
Being a truck driver is a trip full of solitude as well as adventure. The main problem we have is loneliness, but we meet it head-on. So, the next time you see a large truck on the road, keep in mind that someone is driving it and is overcoming the wide road's challenges, including loneliness.
