What kind of Engine Oil does a Semi Truck Use?

It's important to remember that the engine in a semi-truck is what matters most when choosing motor oil, not the brand of the truck. Numerous truck manufacturers offer various engine options, and several truck brands share some engines. As a result, rather than the truck brand, the engine manufacturer frequently provides the oil recommendation.

However, based on their well-known engines, I'll give a broad summary of the oil types these trucks might use:

Volvo

General: 15W-40 or 10W-30 heavy-duty diesel engine oils are used in Volvo tractors.

Volvo D13: VDS-4.5, 15W-40, or 10W-30 diesel engine oil is commonly used.

DD15: Since it is a Detroit engine, 15W-40 or 10W-30 CK-4 diesel engine oil is typically used.

Cummins X15: Typically filled with CK-4 diesel engine oil (15W-40 or 10W-30).

Paccar MX 13: CK-4 diesel engine oil typically uses 15W-40 or 10W-30.

Freightliner

General: Heavy-duty diesel engine oils are usually used in Freightliners. The most popular viscosity grades are 15W-40 or 10W-30. These are intended for diesel engines with high output.

Cascadia: A Detroit DD15 or Cummins X15 engine is frequently installed in a Freightliner Cascadia. Heavy-duty diesel engine oils such as CK-4 15W-40 or 10W-30 are generally suitable for both engines.

M2: Engines for the Freightliner M2 could be Detroit DD8 or Cummins B6.7. They usually use 10W-30 or 15W-40 diesel engine oils, just like the Cascadia.

Peterbilt

General: 15W-40 or 10W-30 heavy-duty diesel engine oils are typically used in Peterbilt trucks, just like Freightliner trucks.

579: The Cummins X15 or Paccar MX-13 engines are frequently found in Peterbilt 579 vehicles. CK-4 diesel engine oils, specifically 15W-40 or 10W-30, are typically used in both engines.

Kenworth

General: Heavy-duty diesel engine oils, usually 15W-40 or 10W-30, are used in Kenworth trucks.

T680: The Paccar MX-13 engine is a common fit for the Kenworth T680. In general, 15W-40 or 10W-30 CK-4 diesel engine oils work well with this engine.

International Truck

General: Heavy-duty diesel engine oils of 15W-40 or 10W-30 are usually used in international trucks.

4300: An International DT466 or an equivalent engine may be found in this model. Use of 15W-40 or 10W-30 diesel engine oils is advised.

4700: Due to its age, this truck model typically has DT466 or DT530 engines. It is advised to use 10W-30 or 15W-40 diesel engine oils.

Mack Truck

General: heavy-duty diesel engine oils of 15W-40 or 10W-30 are used in Mack trucks.

MP8: 15W-40 or 10W-30 diesel engine oils that adhere to OEM guidelines are usually used in Mack MP8 engines.

For recommended engine oil grade and type, it's best to refer to the owner's manual of that particular engine or contact the truck or engine manufacturer.
